The Importance of Cleaning Aircraft and Helicopters

Fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters are robust vehicles, and enacting proper maintenance and cleaning procedures can ensure that they continue to provide their services for a long period of time. While the maintenance and repair of various aircraft parts, helicopter engine components, and more can extend service lives, it is also very important that regular cleaning is carried out. While cleaning may serve to improve aesthetic appearances, it also presents additional ways to protect aircraft and helicopter parts through the removal of damaging substances or materials. In this blog, we will provide a brief overview of common cleaning procedures so that you may properly care for your aircraft.

Before conducting a clean-up, it can be useful to remove any abrasive jewelry, wear clothes that are fine to dirty, and ensure that all  aircraft cleaning equipment is ready to go. Generally, cleaning procedures require towels, degreasers and soaps that cater towards aluminum surfaces, aircraft paint sealants and waxes, and other various cleaners. Most procedures begin with a water wash, thus the pilot should first check all ports, sensors, and water sensitive components to ensure that they are covered and protected from moisture. As such instruments and ports are paramount for conducting safe flights, always make sure that they are uncovered after cleaning is completed.

While cleaning the airframe of an aircraft or helicopter, it is important to remove all the bugs, dirt, and grime that may be caked onto surfaces as such objects can dig away at paint and materials over time if left unchecked. Always be careful when using certain Air cleaning tools as well, as too much pressure or improper handling can be damaging. Soft towels and microfibers are typically sufficient for conducting safe surface cleans, though some may also use their hands if they are so inclined. When spraying water over surfaces, keeping the hose on a low setting will coat materials with water while avoiding too much pressure.

For plexiglass materials, plastic spray cleaners can be useful to conduct an optimal clean, and thick coats may ensure the removal of more sticky substances. For the more difficult areas of the airframe, aluminum-safe degreasers and bug removal sprays are the most beneficial products. Depending on the cleaners one is using, it is recommended to have eye goggles and gloves to avoid injuries or health risks. When cleaning under the aircraft or around heavier surfaces, always ensure that the aircraft is secured and locked for protection.

The inside of the aircraft or helicopter may have more sensitive materials and components, thus warranting more careful cleaning. Never introduce liquids to electronics, and cleaners should specifically be chosen based on the types of materials used for seats, carpets, surfaces, and more. Vacuums cleaner kit can help remove any objects on or under seats, and certain tools may be relied upon for the removal of more sticky objects. It is useful to clean the surfaces of gauges, flight displays, and other flight instrument equipment to ensure their visibility, though proper care should be taken to avoid damaging anything.

While helicopter and aircraft maintenance is always a sure way to avoid component failures and extend service lives, cleaning also plays a major role in the upkeep of such vehicles.
