What are Aircraft Oil Coolers?

The two most common types of helicopter engines are the reciprocating engine and the turbine engine. The heat produced by a helicopter’s engine must be dissipated by either cooling the outside of the engine, cooling the combustion chamber or cooling the oil. Oil cooling is extremely important in maintaining optimal engine performance. Aircraft Oil Coolers help maintain the oil temperature of an aircraft while the engine is running. The thermostatic valve on an oil cooler reroutes the oil back through the system if the oil does not require cooling.

Aircraft Oil Coolers fall into one of two categories, either remote mounted oil coolers or engine mounted. Remote mounted oil coolers mount to the airframe and utilize hoses to carry oil to and from the engine. They come in many shapes and sizes and have many different part numbers but are all basically the same. Engine mounted oil coolers attach directly to the engine and therefore do not need hoses to carry oil between the cooler and the engine. These coolers have two basic varieties, an 8 bolt and 12 bolt. The 12 bolt class of coolers is further divided by the availability of what’s known as Congealing and Non-Congealing oil coolers.

Congealing is a term used to describe the transformation of a fluid into a solid by means of cold temperature. Congealing oil coolers have a base plate thickness of ¼ inch and a Non-Congealing oil cooler has a base plate thickness of ¾ inch. Non-congealing oil coolers use an adapter plate that has a Vernatherm threaded into it. A Vernatherm is a thermostatic bypass valve that controls the flow of the oil to the oil cooler. The easiest way to determine which engine mounted oil cooler is right for your engine is to measure the thickness of the cooler’s base-plate, not to be confused with the oil cooler adaptor plate located between the oil cooler and the engine.
